Where Musicians Become Bands!

At The Music Works, our weekly band skills sessions are designed to provide students aged 7 and over with a comprehensive and enjoyable band experience. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, our sessions are tailored to help you grow as a musician and performer. We welcome students of all ages, including teenagers, adults, and seniors, to join us in creating music together.

One of the key benefits of our band skills sessions is the opportunity to learn in a collaborative environment. Playing in a band teaches students how to listen to each other, synchronise their playing, and create a cohesive sound. This teamwork not only enhances musical skills but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among band members.

Learning in a band setting also exposes students to a wider range of musical styles and genres. Our sessions cover both classic and current songs, giving students a well-rounded musical education. This diversity in repertoire helps to keep lessons engaging and exciting, ensuring that students remain motivated and enthusiastic about their musical journey.

For many students, the idea of performing in front of an audience can be daunting. Our band skills sessions address this by providing a safe and supportive space to practice and build confidence. Students will have the chance to perform regularly in front of their peers, gradually easing into the experience of live performance. This helps to alleviate performance anxiety and build stage presence.

One common pain point for aspiring musicians is the lack of opportunities to play with others. Our band skills sessions solve this by providing a structured environment where students can regularly play and practice with their peers. This consistent interaction with other musicians helps to develop essential skills such as timing, rhythm, and dynamics.

Another benefit of our band skills sessions is the focus on practical, real-world skills. Students will learn everything they need to know to be part of a rock or pop band, from setting up equipment to understanding song structures and arrangements. This hands-on approach ensures that students are well-prepared for any band situation they may encounter. Why not give it a try? Your first lesson is 100% FREE! Take 2 minutes to answer the questions here to find your perfect session.

Our experienced instructors are dedicated to helping each student reach their full potential. They provide personalised guidance and feedback, ensuring that each band member is progressing at their own pace. This individualised attention helps to address any specific challenges or areas of improvement, making the learning experience more effective and enjoyable.

In addition to musical skills, our band skills sessions also emphasise the importance of communication and collaboration. Students will learn how to effectively communicate their ideas and work together to achieve a common goal. These skills are not only valuable in a musical context but also in everyday life, helping students to become more confident and effective communicators.

Performing at local events and venues is a highlight of our band skills program. These performances provide students with the opportunity to showcase their talents and gain real-world experience. The thrill of performing in front of an audience is an invaluable part of the learning process, helping to build confidence and stage presence.

FAQ

Band skills sessions are the same price regardless of age, appropriate for students 7 and up with some experience of their instrument.

Please complete the questions here to determine the ideal place for you or your child’s band sessions.

Band Skills sessions are all about learning how to be a part of a reall life band. You will meet every week for a session, with the same people, developing a variety of skills and building friendships. Work on songcraft, from how your instrument sounds as part of the whole to how you are arranging your parts to fit in the best way possible. Work on stage presence and building your confidence on your instrument. Teamwork and being creative is the key here, a fantastic outlet for young musicians in training!

For our weekly session, yes. We are looking for students to have a firm grasp of their instrument, enough to be able to learn a song and perform it in a reasonable amount of time. We find that grade 2 and up seems to be a good cut off line, and students that join band skills while still learning their instrument in a group or privately tend to see their skillset improve dramtically, quickly!

We do also offer a Beginners’ Band Skills Workshop in the school holidays, which is available to all ability levels. This is a great way to try it out in a fun and social way!

Every band is different! The students involved will have a big say in this, although our teachers will aim to guide students towards songs that will help them level up.

100%! Turning up week on week and doing your best and trying, you will absolutely begin to build confidence in performing. The best way to get good at anything is to try, try, and try again! Doing this witha friendly group who want to see you succeed is about the gentlest way we can make this happen, and the results we see year-on-year are amazing!

All the time! We are involved in many, many events every year and our bands are the crowning jewel of our shows.

We welcome all students above the age of 7 to join our bands! To make this work though, students need some experience on their instrument.

Many of our band students also join us for a weekly private or group instrumental lessons.

This is not quite how we structure our band sessions. Where other education providers perhaps teach the instrument in the sessions while a band is in the room, we believe that we get a much better outcomes by focusing on what makes a band work. From teamwork, to rehearsing the songs together, to performance techniques and even how to set up the stage for a show.

In our sessions students focus on one instrument and work on this role weekly.

Singers have it lucky, eh!? For instrumental students, we highly recommend having an instrument at home to practice with, so you can practice songs between your weekly band sessions.

And of course you’ll need an instrument to be able to perform live with your band!
